Beginner volleyball in Calgary: what a coed night actually looks like
Never played? Here's exactly how a beginner-friendly coed volleyball night in Calgary runs, minute by minute.
By CityCrew Editorial. Updated June 30, 2026.

If you've never played volleyball, a drop-in night sounds intimidating: a gym full of people who clearly know what they're doing, and you, hoping the ball doesn't come your way. Beginner nights are designed to erase exactly that feeling.
The first ten minutes are a quick briefing. How rotations work, how to bump and set without spraining a thumb, and the two or three rules that actually come up. Nobody is expecting you to spike. They're expecting you to have played roughly never, because most of the room has.
Then teams get balanced and rotated, so you're not stuck with the same six people all night. You'll play with people better than you (that's how you improve fast) and people newer than you (that's how you relax). The whole thing is social first and competitive a distant second.
Bring court shoes with a clean sole, water, and a sense of humour about missed serves. That's the entire packing list. You don't need knee pads for your first night, and you definitely don't need to be good.
CityCrew's coed volleyball is built for first-timers arriving on their own. Book a spot, walk in, and let the host sort the rest. Worst case you get a workout. Best case you leave with plans.
